I am a retired consultant anaesthesiologist – Anaesthesia is a very high risk speciality and the chances of accidents are high. I am therefore fully aware of medical accidents. After I retired 8 years ago I joined the CHC, and then the Public Patient Involvement Forum in Wakefield and championed patient rights. I have not personally suffered any unintended harm. During the last 5 years I have realised there are multiple factors which could cause unintended harm to patients, but many of these are avoided and must be avoided. I believe when accidents happen, that the causes and affects should be discussed openly.
