Health Professional Regulation
Following the scandals of Shipman, Ayling, Neale, Kerr & Haslam the Government is finally taking action to reform health professional regulation in the UK. AvMA welcomes most of the proposals in the White Paper Trust Assurance and Safety - The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century and is contributing to the work on implementation. However we still have outstanding concerns. Most notably, AvMA is seeking support to address the following issues:
-
There is a desperate need for an independent information, advice & advocacy service for patients/members of the public who may need to report a dangerous health professional to the fitness to practise procedures of the regulators (the GMC, NMC etc). The need for such support was borne out by the findings of the various reports. Charities such as AvMA and Witness do what they can with their own meagre charitable resources, but no funded service exists. We believe that a specialist service is needed, provided by an independent organisation or organisations working together, who have a UK remit and specialist knowledge and experience in regulatory and medico-legal issues
Please let us know if you agree with the need for such a service and raise the issue with people of influence with whom you have contact.
