13 July 2006 : NHS REDRESS BILL IMPROVED
AvMA Chief Executive Peter Walsh said:
“Whilst this is not the kind of NHS Redress Scheme we would have liked to see ideally, the Government amendments are a very welcome shift towards the principles we and many others have been arguing for. We are grateful to ministers for listening. At the end of the day they were the only real show in town - the Opposition amendments would have been a big step backwards. We hope that the Lords will endorse the improvements that have already been made and that when the scheme is evaluated we might be able to revisit some of the other suggestions AvMA made such as an ‘avoidability test’ rather than using the tort definition of negligence to establish eligibility and independent running of the scheme.”
