Barbara is a nurse by profession and has held nursing and management positions in a variety of NHS organisations, including director of nursing and deputy chief executive of an NHS trust. In this capacity she has had particular responsibility for promoting safe clinical practice and working on the clinical governance strategy.
Following a career in health service management and clinical leadership within the NHS, joining a charity which campaigns for improved patient safety was a natural progression.
Barbara has stayed involved because of the support AvMA gives to people when things have not gone well with their treatment within the NHS or private health care. She considers the independent advice which is available to them through AvMA’s helpline so valuable that she commits to taking calls on the helpline for a couple of hours every fortnight.
Outside of AvMA Barbara is treasurer of the Clinical Disputes Forum and a member of NHS England’s primary care patient safety group.
Barbara lives in Nottinghamshire and has a family which includes three grandchildren who take up a great deal of her time.
