Angela Brown, Treasurer

Angela is Treasurer of AvMA and has a scientific background with a BSc and PhD in Zoology. She has over 20 years’ experience working for a local authority and for a range of NHS Trusts covering learning disabilities, community and mental health, and ambulance services within Northumberland, Teesside and Yorkshire.

Areas of responsibility have included corporate policy; community safety; project management; stakeholder engagement; service development; complaints; claims and other legal services; inquests; the Being open initiative; and patient and public involvement. Her involvement in clinical negligence and patient safety led her to complete an LLM in Claims & Risk Management in Healthcare in 2007.

Angela has a particular interest in the duty of care of emergency services, and the transfer of responsibilities in the interface between clinicians and police officers when dealing with patients who present as violent. She brought her ambulance-perspective experience of high-profile deaths in police custody cases to the table as a member of a working party which published a user-friendly and comprehensible protocol providing appropriate clarity.

Passionate about patient safety, truth, justice, the principle of Being open and the duty of candour, Angela became a trustee of AvMA in 2012. She represents AvMA in the North of England e.g. the ThinkSAFE project, and nationally e.g. NHS England’s Patient Safety Expert Groups. She is a member of the Finance and Investment Committee and supports the fundraising function.

Angela enjoys exploring the Scottish west coast and delights in being a granny.
