Professor Jane Reid

Jane has enjoyed a career of nursing posts in acute care and higher education; roles within recent years have included President of the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), President of the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN), Nurse Advisor WHO 2nd Global Challenge Safe Surgery Saves Lives (Geneva), Associate Dean (Nursing and Allied Health Professions) Bournemouth University. Jane also played a key role in support of the national patient safety campaigns Patient Safety First and Sign up to Safety.

With a small consultancy portfolio Jane also operates as an independent reviewer/advisor in support of organisations wishing to learn from surgical never events and additionally provides pro bono support to several national and international charities. Her current portfolio includes visiting Professor University Teaching Hospital Lusaka and All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Jane remains as a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University (UK).

Starting her clinical career path in the operating theatre, Jane is acutely aware of the risk/ harm for patients and attending clinicians. Despite efforts a blame culture is still prevalent in the NHS. Jane is passionate about patient safety, the importance of truth and honesty in the services provided and assuring justice for those injured by failures of systems and services. Jane joined AvMA in 2019 and will play in addition to her Board role a contribution to the Quality & Outcome Committee.
