Healthcare professional regulation
The effective regulation of healthcare professionals is vital to patient safety and upholding good standards in the health professions.
The current system grew up in an ad hoc fashion leading to big inconsistencies between the regulators. Although bodies like the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) have made major improvements in recent years, much improvement is still needed.
AvMA is calling for
- the government to introduce a Bill as soon as possible to modernise regulation and ensure it has patient safety at its core
- an end to the “five year rule” still used by the GMC
- dropping the use of perceived “vexatiousness” to avoid investigating concerns
- rights to an independent review of decisions not to investigate and access to specialist independent advice about raising concerns.
