Patients for Patient Safety

AvMA champions the role of patients themselves in improving patient safety. Often, people affected by lapses in patient safety who come to AvMA for help want to play their a part in helping healthcare to become safer. AvMA worked as a key partner of the National Patient Safety Agency (before it was abolished), to involve patients in its work on patient safety and to develop the role of patients in patient safety work with the NHS across England and Wales. AvMA was commissioned to run the Patients for Patient Safety and Patient Safety Champions projects. Reports on this work and recommendations for developing patient involvement in patient safety can be found here:

Formative evaluation of year one: December 2009

Report on the pilot project: April 2006 – March 2008

Although funding for this work came to an end with the abolition of the National Patient Safety Agency, AvMA continues to maintain a mailing list of a growing Patients for Patient Safety Network of over 2,000 individuals who are interested in patient safety and helping the NHS with patient safety work.
