AvMA has consistently called for a statutory duty of candour in Wales at every opportunity but been told by the Welsh Assembly Government that it was not needed or could not work. Over time it became more apparent to everyone that it was needed, helped by developments in England and the Mid Staffordshire Public Inquiry.

Events at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, where AvMA helped bring patients’ experience to the fore, and the resultant independent review added to the pressure. Several official reports including the review of the Putting Things Right scheme have recommended a statutory duty and the Welsh Assembly Government has signalled its intention to bring this in.

Welsh Assembly Government has now passed legislation on bringing in a statutory Duty of Candour. AvMA has advised on appropriate guidance on implementing the duty which is expected to be published soon.
