Our impact

Across 2024–25, we helped thousands of people. With your support, we can achieve even more next year.

The only people doing what we do

Avma is the only UK charity solely dedicated to supporting people affected by avoidable medical harm. We help individuals and their families to find answers and ensure their voices are heard. We use the insights from those we support to influence policy changes, improving safety inside healthcare systems and practices.

Empowering patients

Over 1 in 5 people who contact our helpline have already been turned down by a solicitor. Our staff and volunteers deliver tailored support that is clear, empathetic, and actionable which is consistently well received by the people we serve.

In 2024–25, our casework reach increased 15.7%, with over two-thirds of written advice recipients finding the information we provided vital in shaping their next steps.

The advice I received was really thoughtful and considerate. I was given options of what I could do, and I felt that I was listened to, understood, and I now know what I’m going to do in terms of making the complaint. I feel much better for having phoned, and I’m very grateful for the advice you have given both on the helpline and the website. Thank you so much.

Making healthcare safer

Our expertise is shaping national conversations on patient safety, transparency, and redress — informing policy, influencing regulatory reform, and amplifying the voice of harmed patients at the highest levels.

In 2024–25, we responded to six major policy consultations, contributed to 16 national media stories on patient safety and systemic reform, and engaged with 30+ organisations helping to shape the patient safety landscape.

AvMA remains deeply committed to our mission of supporting those affected by avoidable medical harm and improving the systems that let them down.

Influencing best practice

We created the first Specialist Clinical Negligence Panel of solicitors in 1983 — a pioneering step to ensure people affected by medical harm can access accredited, expert legal support.

With 13 new appointments and 33 reaccreditations in 2024–25, our team continue to ensure that only those meeting the highest standards remain accredited. We reached over 1,900 professionals through our events, strengthening the legal community’s ability to advocate effectively for patients.

I was able to secure the only Avma specialist panel solicitor who lives in the same town as me. They have vast experience and knowledge. I am very happy and grateful to you all.

Champions for change

We couldn’t do this work without our community of supporters. During 2024–25, 115 volunteers generously contributed their free time to Avma, including 1,500 hours of pro bono expert support from our partner lawyers.

Our donors and fundraisers gave us the resources to carry out our work. Your belief in our mission strengthens our resolve and reminds the people we support that they are not alone.

It’s amazing someone would give their time to help me with this. I was scared and didn’t know what to do. She explained things so clearly and didn’t rush me. It meant the world.
