Volunteer self-help guide presenter

Create engaging video content to help people through their journey, providing comfort and clarity at a difficult time.

About this role

  • Role title: Volunteer Self-Help Guide Presenter
  • Department: Fundraising, Marketing & Communications
  • Time commitment: This is a flexible role that can fit around your availability. There is no minimum time commitment, but ideally we’d encourage 3–4 hours per month. Opportunities to get involved will be shared with you to choose what feels right based on your time, interests, and confidence.

The aim of our self-help guide presenter role is to guide people through the resources available for information, support and advice, particularly our self-help guides.

Volunteer self-help guide presenters play an important role in making our guides feel more accessible and supportive. By introducing a resource in the form of a short video, you’ll be helping more people feel confident in taking that first step, especially at what can be a difficult time.

Bringing a calm, clear, human voice to our work, you help people understand their options and feel supported as they navigate complex processes.

What this role involves

What you might do:

  • Record short ‘piece to camera’ video introductions for self-help guides
  • Record voiceovers explaining key points from particular resources
  • Help make complex processes feel clearer and more manageable
  • Contribute to a library of accessible video content on Avma’s website and social media

Where your content may be used:

  • On the Avma website (alongside the content of our self-help guides)
  • On our social media channels (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn)
  • As part of our awareness, support, and fundraising campaigns

What you’ll gain from this role

  • Develop communication and presentation skills: Gain experience speaking clearly and confidently on camera.
  • Build confidence in video and digital communication: Create content that supports and informs a wide audience.
  • Strengthen your understanding of patient safety and healthcare systems: Gain insight into real-world issues affecting patients and families navigating the healthcare system.
  • Gain experience in translating complex information: Help make detailed guidance clear and accessible.
  • Work alongside a national charity: Contribute to resources that directly support thousands of patients and families.
  • Demonstrate commitment to a cause: Show your involvement in supporting people affected by avoidable medical harm and improving patient safety for all.
  • Engage with the wider medico-legal sector: Gain insight into how legal and support services work together to support patients.

Ready to get involved?

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer self-help guide presenter, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll start with a 20-minute informal conversation to talk through the role, get you know you a little better, and answer any questions you may have. You’ll then be invited to a training session where we introduce you to Avma’s work, key messages, and how you can feel confident in your new role.
