Lisa’s background is as a clinical negligence claimant solicitor. She also became a CEDR-accredited mediator in 2001. Lisa started working for Avma in 2010, and after pioneering our pro bono inquest service, took the position of Director of Medico-Legal Services in 2013.
Since then, she has led the development and growth of Avma’s medico-legal department, overseeing specialist advice, legal referrals, inquest support, and information services for patients and families affected by avoidable medical harm. Lisa has been instrumental in many of Avma’s campaigns, including work on fixed recoverable costs for low-value clinical negligence claims.
Lisa has extensive expertise in clinical negligence, patient advocacy, and access to justice, together with significant experience in leading specialist medico-legal services. She believes litigation should be a last resort and that more should be done to learn from medical mistakes and address patient’s concerns at the complaint stage, if not before.
Author of the chapter “Non legal remedies” in Lewis & Buchan’s Clinical Negligence: A Practical Guide and more recently “The state of NHS Resolution’s payouts for clinical negligence claims” published in the Journal of Personal Injury Law, Lisa regularly contributes to national discussions on patient safety, healthcare complaints, and access to justice. Her work focuses on ensuring that patients and families can access independent, high-quality advice while promoting improvements in healthcare standards and patient safety.
Lisa was one of the architects of the highly regarded Clinical Negligence Protocol (2020), relied upon by claimant and defendant lawyers during the pandemic, and subsequently the Clinical Negligence Claims Agreement which superseded the protocol in 2024.
