Bill Kilvington

Bill is an Operating Department Practitioner, one of the less well-known of the 14 allied health professions. He worked for 46 years in the NHS, most recently as Divisional Director for Women and Child Health Services at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, where he was part of the team in first wave of the Maternal and Neonatal Patient Safety Collaborative.

A member of the Professional Council of the College of Operating Department Practitioners and its Patient Safety Lead, Bill is a past President of the College and has a longstanding commitment to patient care and safety. He was a member of the NHS England Surgical Never Events Taskforce and chaired one of the writing groups that produced the National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (NatSSIPs).

Bill continues to be involved in national patient safety initiatives, most recently as a member of the Clinical Advisory Group for the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Deaths (NCEPOD) study on emergency surgery for children and young people, and now as an advisory group member for the NHS Resolution Maternity (Perinatal) Incentive Scheme.

A fellow of the College of Operating Department Practitioners, in 2018 Bill was awarded honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists for services to anaesthesia.
