Dr Jocelyn Cornwell MBE

Chair of Trustees
Dr Jocelyn Cornwell MBE has a distinguished NHS career spanning senior civil service, management, and healthcare regulation. She leads our board of trustees and focuses on transforming how organisations support both harmed families and the staff involved in medical incidents.

About Jocelyn

Jocelyn has over 30 years’ experience working to improve the quality and safety of healthcare in the UK. Throughout her career, she has consistently broken new ground — pioneering locality management in North London in the late 1980s, leading value-for-money studies at the Audit Commission in the 1990s, and heading regulation and inspection work at the Commission for Health Improvement, where she designed the first ever independent inspections of NHS organisations.

Personal experience of medical harm within her family led Jocelyn to found the Point of Care Foundation, a charity dedicated to making the experience of healthcare better and more human for patients and staff alike. Under her leadership, the organisation pioneered training in experience-based co-design with patients and health professionals and introduced Schwartz Rounds to the UK — a method that helps staff process the emotional and psychological impact of their work. By 2026, the Foundation had established Schwartz Rounds in over 200 health and higher education institutions across the UK and Ireland.

Jocelyn holds a degree in History & Social and Political Science from Cambridge University, along with an MSc in Sociology Applied to Medicine and a PhD, both from the University of London. She has served as a trustee for a number of charities, including Connect UK, the Picker Institute, the Mental Health Foundation, and the Nuffield Trust. In January 2025, Jocelyn was awarded an MBE for services to patients’ experience of care and patient safety.
